communities taking action against pcbs

PCBs never should have been released into our communities and our global environment in massive quantities. But the good news is that communities are taking action to protect themselves -- and all of us! Here are some of the successes in communities across the U.S.A.:

  • On the Housatonic River, after a fight of more than ten years, cleanup of the most PCB-contaminated section has taken place.
  • In Warren County, North Carolina, where a PCB dump was forced on an African-American community, the PCBs there are now being destroyed using an innovative method that the community helped select.
  • In Anniston, Alabama, after civil rights leaders and environmentalists marched together, the courts have granted judgements of over $*** to community members.
  • Alaskan natives are working with Alaska Community Action on Toxics and a science team on a four-year project (part of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences’ Environmental Justice Initiative) to address the military contamination on St. Lawrence Island, as well as long-range contamination.
